Test Chambers

Test Chambers. Also known as environmental test chambers, test chambers are vital for researchers in a variety of fields who seek to test the integrity of their products or specimens. You need to know if they can withstand climatic changes, temperature and humidity changes, and other stress. For over 20 years, Darwin Chambers has been a leading designer and manufacturer of test chambers for all types of researchers. What Are Test Chambers?

Test chambers are enclosed spaces used to conduct scientific experiments or test the effects of environmental conditions on test subjects. The controlled environment of a test chamber allows researchers to accurately replicate conditions that would be difficult or impossible to duplicate in the real world. Charles F. Conrad invented the first environmental test chamber on his front porch in Holland, MI in 1951, by modifying his home freezer to reach temperatures of -87℃. He sold it to General Motors Heat Treat Lab, who quickly ordered two more.

Since then, test chambers have been designed and used to simulate a wide range of conditions, from extreme cold and heat, humid or dust-filled environments to sea-salt environments. They can also be used to replicate the conditions of outer space or high-altitude conditions.

In addition to temperature and humidity, test chambers can also be used to control other aspects of the environment, such as air pressure, atmospheric composition, and even electromagnetic fields. By controlling these factors, researchers can create environments that would be impossible to duplicate outside of a test chamber.

Types of Test Chambers

Darwin Chambers first introduced our stability chambers in 2003 as the first large-capacity thermoelectric-cooled pharmaceutical test chamber. Since then, we've continued to innovate, combining our technologies and our expertise to deliver precise and reliable chambers that are ideal for researchers in a variety of fields. Some of our most popular test chambers include:

  • Environmental Test Chambers — One of Darwin Chambers' top-selling units, our environmental chambers are quiet, easy to clean, highly reliable and ideal for laboratory use, offering unparalleled temperature and humidity control. They offer a temperature range of 2℃ to 50℃, and greater temperature ranges can be achieved through optional upgrades to construction and components.
  • Stability Test Chambers — Our stability test chambers are designed to exceed FDA and ICH requirements. Thousands of our stability chambers are presently in use by many pharmaceutical, cosmetic, nutraceutical, medical device, therapeutic pharmaceuticals, pharmaceutical stress testing, and other research companies around the world. We also offer stability refrigerators and stability freezers.
  • Material Test/Cure Chambers — These are ideal for the rigors of precision temperature and humidity control in concrete, asphalt, and related industries. Unlike the vast majority of "testing" apparatus available to control temperature/humidity for engineering demands, these chambers provide reliable operation, durable construction, and accurate results. The MC Series offers serious performance to engineers and researchers looking for serious results.
  • Altitude Test Chambers — We have teamed up with Colorado Altitude Training (CAT), located in Boulder, Colorado, to offer a unique chamber for altitude simulation. Our system can reduce the oxygen content from 20.9% to 15.2% to simulate 9,000 feet at sea level, while keeping the pressure unchanged. Our altitude test room clients include the U.S Olympic Committee, U.S. Speed Skating Team, Harvard University, Doha Sports Hospital, U.A.E., College of William and Mary, Mayo Clinic, Tour de France winners, Ironman World Champions, Pro cycling Team and many more.
  • Freeze/Thaw Test Chambers — These are ideal for researchers who need ramp/soak programming. These chambers allow you to determine if your product will remain stable under various conditions. During the freeze/thaw cycle your product is put through a series of extreme temperature changes that it may encounter during its life cycle. Versatility with the chamber includes varying the freeze and thaw temperatures, duration in the freeze and thaw parts of a cycle, and overall number of cycles per day. These Freeze Thaw chambers are ideal for ASTM materials testing, as well as testing for drugs, food & beverage, and personal care products. They have a temperature range of -25℃ to 50℃.
  • Heated-Humidified Incubators/Ovens Our HH Series chambers can be used as pharmaceutical stress test chambers at 50C/75%RH. They can maintain temperatures as low as 5℃ or as high as 70℃ and offer maximum efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Our exclusive ultrasonic humidification system eliminates hot spots in the chamber and greatly reduces required operational and maintenance costs.
