NIH Selects Darwin Chambers for Specialized Insect Rearing Chambers

Posted by Darwin Chambers on July 24, 2026

Sole-source determination reinforces Darwin Chambers' leadership in precision environmental control for research applications.

Earlier this year, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) selected Darwin Chambers as the sole-source provider of specialized insect rearing chambers designed to support cutting-edge behavioral and molecular biology research.

The equipment will be used by the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Section on Neural Function (LMB/SNF), where researchers study hormonal regulation of behavior using Drosophila (fruit flies) as a model organism. Maintaining highly controlled environmental conditions is critical to producing reproducible experimental outcomes, requiring precise control of temperature, humidity, and lighting.

After conducting extensive market research, the NIH determined that Darwin Chambers was the only manufacturer capable of meeting the laboratory's requirements. The agency cited Darwin Chambers' proprietary equipment design and its role as the sole provider of maintenance services for the requested systems. Reviews of available product literature, government purchasing databases, and previous government acquisitions found no alternative suppliers that satisfied all technical requirements.

The procurement included two specialized insect rearing chambers, along with shipping and installation services, enabling the laboratory to house and maintain its collection of Drosophila stocks under standardized environmental conditions.

Supporting Reproducible Science

Environmental control plays a foundational role in modern life sciences research. Even minor variations in temperature, humidity, or photoperiods can influence developmental, behavioral, and physiological outcomes in insect model organisms.

Darwin Chambers designs controlled environment solutions that enable researchers to confidently reproduce environmental conditions across experiments and over time. By delivering precise, repeatable control of critical variables, researchers can focus on scientific discovery while maintaining confidence in the integrity of their data.

Built for Specialized Research Applications

From insect rearing and plant growth to peptide stability testing and pharmaceutical storage, Darwin Chambers engineers controlled environments tailored to the unique requirements of scientific and industrial applications.

The NIH's sole-source selection underscores the importance of application-specific chamber design when research outcomes depend on environmental precision and repeatability.
